Sam played varsity soccer and was one of the original co-captains on the 1974 team which finished runner-up in division three NCAA. As a senior, he was also one of the co-captains for varsity lacrosse, and was co-winner of the Kwink Trophy (awarded to the Senior Male Athlete best exemplifying Kwink Ideals - Service, Spirit, Scholarship, Society, and Sportsmanship). Sam majored in Psychology; worked at the ABC House, and in evenings at the Lamb-Miller Field House. Remaining in Philadelphia after Swarthmore, he attended and received the first of three Masters Degrees, (Social Service) from Bryn Mawr College Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research. As part of this program (which led also to a Masters in Law and Social Policy) his Field Placements were both in Chester - Legal Services and District Office of U.S. Representative Robert Edgar. During this time, he was boys soccer coach at Devon Prep, where Swarthmore College Men’s Third Team Soccer Coach Ed Townsley served as Athletic Director. After returning to hometown Bethesda, he continued political work, serving as a staff person for a Member of Congress; paid and volunteer positions in Mayoral, Congressional, Presidential campaigns, and National Political Conventions; and served as Special Assistant to the Executive Director of the Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration. Business pursuits followed in graphic design, publishing, printing, and 15 years in international business consulting, during which he earned an M.B.A. from Loyola in Maryland. Later, Sam had a 10 year Fundraising career leading to positions at American University School of International Service and Harriet Fulbright's Global Summit for Peaceful Nations. Sam credits Swarthmore for developing his interests in philanthropy from time spent as a student fundraising volunteer, and work at the ABC House. Sam has served in volunteer and paid positions on Boards of the French American Chamber of Commerce of Washington D.C. and Basix Corporation. In February of 2024 he retired from 13 years as a Budget and Acquisition Analyst for a U.S. Navy Radar Program office.
