Annie Fetter ’88 earned 12 letters at Swarthmore, playing field hockey, basketball, and softball, serving as captain of all three teams as a senior, and earning Regional All-American honors in field hockey, PAIAW Player of the Year in softball, and multiple all-conference and all-tournament honors.  She majored in mathematics and music, got certified to teach secondary mathematics, and was the Sports Editor of the Phoenix for three years. After graduating, she served as an assistant field hockey coach for eight years and assistant softball coach for five, as well as head softball coach for one, and was involved in the Friends of Swarthmore Athletics and the Friends of Music and Dance for many years.  Her family endows Swarthmore’s Chamber Music Program at Swarthmore, named for her grandmother, Elizabeth Pollard Fetter ’25 (a varsity field hockey and basketball player in her time).

Annie worked for Gene Klotz in the Swarthmore Math Department on several National Science Foundation grants.  One of those became The Math Forum, an online community for the math community.  She continued to work for the Math Forum until its dissolution in December 2017.  She now works part-time for the 21st Century Partnership for STEM Education, continuing the Math Forum’s work on two NSF grants.  She’s also a math textbook contributing author and consults with schools, districts, and states, and speaks at math education conferences, encouraging a focus on mathematical sense-making and leveraging students’ own ideas in the classroom.

She retired from playing softball a few of years ago, but continues to play basketball and ice hockey.  She also represents the United States internationally in Masters field hockey.  Musically, she plays bass and sings in an all-girl band and at bluegrass and acoustic music circles.  Annie lives a mere 1.9 miles from the field house, in Rutledge.
