SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College field hockey team fell to Scranton University, 2-1, in a shootout on Saturday afternoon.
Josie Sarno was excellent in the cage, logging 10 saves including three stops in overtime.
Gabriella Vasquez accounted for the lone Garnet goal with a tally in the 37th minute. The Royals knotted up the game with an equalizer in the 43rd minute before prevailing with a pair of goals in a shootout.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams traded early saves in a scoreless opening frame. Sarno then kept Scranton off the board with a trio of stops in the final five minutes of the quarter. The rookie accounted for four saves in the stanza, while surviving a 5-2 Scranton shot advantage.
- Sarno saved her lone opportunity in the 24th minute of a scoreless second quarter. Magdelana Jordan fired off the team's lone shot attempt, but missed wide.
- Both offenses came alive in a back-and-forth third quarter. The Garnet attempted the first four shots of the stanza, including a go-ahead score from Vasquez. Hayley Harris fed a backhanded strike to the opposite post, which was hammered home by the senior forward. The Royals dictated pace towards the backend of the frame, registering the final four shots and the game-tying score.
- Sarno stopped her only attempt of the third period. The Garnet then created a few opportunities with shots on goal from Hannah Ulrich and Jordan. Both Swarthmore attempts were stopped by defensive saves to force an overtime period.
- Swarthmore had three penalty corners in the first overtime, but were unable to sneak a goal past the Royals keeper. Sarno did her job on the defensive end, making a couple saves to send the game to a shootout.
- The Garnet attack was turned away on all four shootout attempts, while Scranton clinched victory with a pair of goals. Sarno made a couple quality saves in the shootout, but the Swarthmore offense wasn't enough.
