CHESTER, Pa. – The Swarthmore College field hockey team upped its win streak to four with a 5-0 rout of Widener University on the road on Saturday.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Garnet found the back of the cage in the second and led 1-0 at the half. Swarthmore then pulled away with two goals in both the third and fourth quarters.
Libby Castle scored twice with
Gabriella Vasquez,
Magdelana Jordan, and
Hannah Ulrich each adding one goal.
Josie Sarno stopped six shots for her second shutout of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet pressured the Pride from the opening whistle, recording five shots and two penalty corners within the first 10 minutes of the contest. However, Swarthmore came up empty and it remained scoreless after one.

Annika Hoyer nearly broke the ice just over four minutes into the second but Widener came up with a defensive save. However, Vasquez batted home a loose ball in front of the cage just 25 seconds later to put the Garnet in front. The Pride almost recorded the equalizer later in the frame but
Ananya Leahy came through with a defensive save to keep her squad ahead.
- Jordan beat the goalkeeper off a penalty corner in the 39
th minute to put Swarthmore ahead by two. She dribbled in from the top of the scoring area and sent the ball toward the cage. The hit deflected off a defender and into the net.
- In the final minute of the third, Castle followed up her own rebound in front to make it a three-goal cushion. The first-year added her second of the game in the 49
th minute. Ulrich closed the scoring in the 51
st minute after winning a battle in front.
