SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College field hockey team knocked off No. 8 Stevens Institute of Technology, 1-0, at Clothier Field Stadium on Saturday afternoon for the Garnet's signature win of the young season. Swarthmore has now defeated a nationally-ranked squad in each of the last four campaigns.
Julia Powell tallied the lone goal of the contest in the fifth minute, the first of the senior defender's career, and Swarthmore made it stand. The Garnet stifled the Ducks for the majority of the afternoon, holding the visitors to just four shots, three of which did not come until the fourth quarter.
Josie Sarno made four saves to record her first career shutout.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Powell converted on the first shot of the game just 4:54 into the opening quarter. On the second of two straight Swarthmore penalty corners, Powell inserted to
Hannah Ulrich at the top of the circle. Ulrich then returned the ball to Powell, who had set up off the left post. Powell corralled the pass and blasted a shot past the goalkeeper to give her team the lead.
- The Garnet nearly went ahead 2-0 in the 11
th minute when they were awarded a penalty stroke. However, the attempt missed wide and it remained a one-goal game. Swarthmore continued to make it difficult for Stevens, not allowing the Ducks to settle into an offensive rhythm. Stevens managed just three penalty corners and one shot through three quarters of play.
- The Ducks had their best scoring opportunity in the fourth, coming just inches away from the equalizer in the 50
th minute. During a scrum in front, the ball found its way behind Sarno and looked to be rolling into the cage. However, the rookie recovered to make an outstanding stop, reaching back and sweeping the ball off the goal line with her stick.
- Sarno made two more saves in the final period, including a kick-save on a shot with velocity off a penalty corner in the 56
th minute. It was the last attempt permitted by the Garnet as they finished off the win.
