Baseball Surrenders Ninth-Inning Rally at Muhlenberg

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Swarthmore College baseball team dropped the final game of its series against Muhlenberg College, 15-12, capped off by a wild nine-run ninth inning by the Mules on Friday.

Muhlenberg trailed 12-6 heading into the bottom of the ninth following Zac Kahn's homer to lead off the top of the inning. The Mules were down to their last out at 12-7, but scored eight more runs capped by a walk-off three run shot in a key conference victory. The Garnet had won 14-10 when the two teams faced off in Swarthmore on Tuesday.

The result leaves a muddy playoff conference playoff picture as five league teams stand at 5-7 and tied for the final postseason playoff position.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore plated three runs with two outs in the second behind three hits, a walk and an error. Aidan Sullivan's homer plated two, while Nathaniel Kittredge stole home to open the scoring. Muhlenberg countered with a two-out hit of their own to cut the deficit to 3-1.

- The Garnet left the bases loaded in the top half of the third before the Mules paired a two-out double with a homer to knot the score at 3-3.

- In the fourth, Muhlenberg jumped in front with a walk and three hits in the frame, but Noah Pottholm limited the damage via a strikeout and key fly ball to retire the side.

- The visitors clawed their way back with a Brad Johnston homer before chasing the Mules' starter with a hit-by-pitch and walk. With two outs, Noam AuYeung tripled to right center to make it 5-4 Swarthmore. The back-and-forth affair continued in the bottom half of the fifth as a one-out single followed by a pair of hits scored two, regaining the lead for the Mules at 6-5.

- Swarthmore fought back again to level the score at six runs in the seventh. Kittredge led off with a double then scored on a fielding error after a Propper-Bowring's single.  Evan Hawkes then brought home a pair with a go-ahead double, before a throwing error and a Kahn RBI single gave the Garnet a 10-6 edge.

- AuYeung had a one-out single, stole second and then scored on a Sullivan two-out knock to expand the Garnet lead in the eighth. Kahn then led off the ninth with a homer to left center to increase Swarthmore's advantage to six runs heading into the final frame.

- The Mules flipped momentum in the eighth, plating nine runs on seven hits and two errors to stun the Garnet. Muhlenberg delivered the final blow with a walk-off, three-run homer.
