No. 21 Women’s Tennis Storms Back to Defeat No. 26 Mary Washington

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The No. 21 Swarthmore College women's tennis team made a late comeback to defeat No. 26 University of Mary Washington, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon. The Garnet were trailing 3-2 with a pair of matches remaining, but swept the remaining contests to steal a victory. 

Uma Pogrebivsky and Kathleen Shiffer played heroes with wins at sixth and fourth singles, respectively. Shiffer was responsible for clinching duties, handling her opponent in a pair of tiebreakers. She was also a multi-match winner, teaming with Paola Almeda for a second doubles victory. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles claimed the doubles point with a 2-1 edge over the Garnet. Shiffer/ Almeda won 6-2 at the second position, but the Garnet lost a pair of 6-1 decisions at first and third doubles. 

- Ella Strickler won her 11th-straight match with a victory at No. 3 singles. The junior took the opening set 6-3, before closing with a 6-2 decision. 

- Following an Eagles win at top singles, the Garnet evened the score with a triumph in the fifth position. Hannah Kideckel held on for a 7-5 win in the opening set before closing things out with another tight decision, winning 6-4. 

- Mary Washington regained the lead with a three-set victory at second singles. Erin Li cruised to a 6-1 win in the opening set, but dropped a pair of 6-4 decisions to lose the set. The Eagles moved within a match of clinching a team win.

- Swarthmore snatched a victory from the Eagles with wins at fourth and sixth singles. Pogrebivsky evened the score in the sixth position, winning 7-6, 6-2. Shiffer then clinched a team win with a pair of 7-6 triumphs. The senior won the opening set tiebreaker 7-5, before finishing the second tiebreaker 7-1.
