Women's Lacrosse Turns It Around in Second Half to Beat Washington

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Swarthmore College women's lacrosse team outscored Washington College 13-1 in the second half to rally for a 17-9 victory on Saturday, picking up its first Centennial Conference win of the season.

The Garnet fell behind 6-1 by the 11:11 mark of the second quarter. The score was 8-3 when Aubree Daugherty's goal with 22 seconds left got Swarthmore within four and gave the visitors momentum heading into the break. The Garnet then went off for 12 unanswered goals to open the second half and take control of the game.

The win marked the second in a row for Swarthmore versus the Shorewomen, the Garnet's first back-to-back victories in the series since 2007. It was also Swarthmore's first road triumph at Washington since 2006.

Daugherty led the way with a career-high seven points on four goals and three assists. Kela Watts potted five goals, setting a new career best. Annabel Stifler netted four goals while Kate Fox tallied two goals and one assist. Fox also collected 11 draw controls and three caused turnovers. Brooke Carrier made a season-high 12 saves in goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Washington bested the Garnet in every statistical category in the first quarter and built a 5-1 lead after 15 minutes of play. Claire Long had the lone goal in the period for Swarthmore.

- The Garnet generated more opportunities in the second, outshooting the Shorewomen 12-6 and putting seven of their shots on cage, but they were unable to gain any ground as each squad scored three times in the frame. Daugherty scored all three Swarthmore goals in the quarter, two of which were back-to-back on the same woman-up chance. The Garnet trailed 8-4 at halftime.

- Swarthmore came out and dominated the third to turn the game around. The Garnet did not commit a single turnover and outshot Washington 12-6 in the stanza. Swarthmore rattled off six goals and Carrier stopped all five shots she saw to shut out the Shorewomen in the quarter. Watts and Stifler each scored twice with Daugherty and Fox tallying one goal apiece. The Garnet were ahead 10-8 heading into the final period.

- Swarthmore continued to control the contest in the fourth, recording 11 shots to seven for Washington. The Garnet netted six more unanswered goals to pull away to a 16-8 advantage with 7:18 remaining. Watts potted three with Fox, Stifler, and Isabella Fermo each hitting the back of the net once. Coupled with Daugherty's second-quarter tally, Swarthmore went on an 13-0 run overall to flip the contest. The Shorewomen ended their scoring drought at the 6:20 mark but Stifler put an exclamation point on the comeback victory with 2:09 to go.
