SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College men's lacrosse team came up on the short end of a defensive battle versus No. 14 Dickinson College, falling to the Red Devils 10-7 in a Centennial Conference contest on Saturday afternoon.
The teams combined for just three goals in the opening quarter. Dickinson created separation in the second, netting three of the four tallies in the period. The two sides each recorded five goals in the second half, but the Garnet were only able to cut the deficit to three over the final 30 minutes.
Ryder Maston potted four goals while
Clay Almgren registered three assists.
Rex Mabbs produced three points on one goal and two helpers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The squads played tight defense and limited opportunities in the opening period as just seven of the 16 shots in the frame were on goal. The Red Devils scored twice just 42 seconds apart early in the quarter to take a 2-0 lead. Maston got Swarthmore on the board at the 9:43 mark to make it 2-1 heading into the second.
- Dickinson held the Garnet scoreless for nearly the entire second period, netting three unanswered goals to up the advantage to four (5-1). With time winding down, Maston beat the buzzer and the goalkeeper with a shot from distance to get Swarthmore within three at halftime.
- The Garnet had their highest total of shots on goal in the third but were limited to two tallies as the Dickinson goalie notched four saves. The Red Devils won the period 3-2 to take an 8-4 lead into the fourth.
- Dickinson played strong defense again in the fourth, holding Swarthmore to just one goal in the first 14 minutes as it increased the cushion to five (10-5). Mabbs and Maston both scored in the last minute of play to close out the contest.
