SPARKS, Md. – The Swarthmore College men's lacrosse team came up short in a back-and-forth contest versus No. 14 Amherst College, falling by a 13-11 score at the USA Lacrosse Headquarters on Wednesday.
There were several lead changes in the game as the teams traded momentum. The score was even at 10 entering the fourth quarter before the Mammoths won the period with three of the four tallies to take the victory.
Clay Almgren paced the Garnet with five points on one goal and four assists.
Rex Mabbs and
Ryder Maston each potted a team-high three goals.
Drew Tyson posted his fourth straight double-digit save performance, finishing with 16 stops.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore started off strong with four of the first five goals to lead 4-1 with 5:38 left in the opening quarter. Mabbs led the way with two goals while Maston and
Owen George each netted one. However, Amherst responded with five in a row to take the upper hand for the first time, 6-4, at the 12:33 mark of the second.
- The Garnet bounced back with three consecutive tallies to go back in front, 7-6, with 9:54 to go in the first half. Almgren, Maston, and
Gabe Malcolm found the back of the net for Swarthmore. The Mammoths had the final marker of the second quarter and the teams were even at seven at the intermission.
- Amherst began the third quarter with three unanswered goals to take a 10-7 advantage with 11:04 on the clock. The Garnet responded with three goals of their own to tie it up at 10 after 45 minutes of play. Mabbs,
Ronan Butler, and
Nolan Ohrman all beat the goalkeeper.
- The Mammoths then controlled play in the final frame, winning three of the four face-offs and outshooting Swarthmore 13-7. Amherst scored three in a row to go ahead 13-10 with 4:51 remaining. Maston answered for the Garnet at the 2:09 mark but Swarthmore was unable to chip away further at the deficit.
