SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's basketball team picked up a thrilling conference victory against Haverford College, 50-47, behind a game-winning three from
Carly Murphy on Wednesday evening.
Murphy was exceptional for the Garnet, knocking down several big buckets throughout the game. The junior ended the game with 13 points while shooting a perfect three-for-three from beyond the arc.
Vianna Kanyamiheto-Watson led the Garnet with 14 points, while Catherine Chadwell added 12 points, eight rebounds and five steals to headline a strong night for the rookie duo.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Late in the first quarter, back-to–back buckets from
Lily Czub and Murphy gave the Garnet a three-point lead.
Samara Diggs set up the latter bucket with an offensive rebound to help steal a couple points for Swarthmore. Kanyamiheto-Watson then closed the stanza with a long three-pointer, giving the Garnet an 11-6 edge at the first intermission.
- Swarthmore broke out to a fast start in the second stanza with points from Chadwell and Czub in the opening minute. The Garnet rallied for a stretch of six-straight points before the Fords climbed back into contention with a 5-0 answer, cutting their deficit to six.
- Later in the second, Kanyamiheto-Watson got the Garnet back on track with another three-pointer with 4:29 left. Raven Richardson added to the scoring with a couple midrange jumpers, leading the Garnet to a 24-18 halftime advantage.
- Haverford went on a 10-5 run to trim its deficit to three points with 6:29 left in the third. Murphy and Czub then knocked down threes on back-to-back possessions to build Swarthmore's lead to 37-28 with 3:29 remaining. The Garnet entered the final stanza with a 37-30 lead.
- Swarthmore scored the opening five points of the fourth quarter with a Chadwell jumper and a Kanyamiheto-Watson three in the opening minute. The Fords would counter with a 10-0 rally to pull within a bucket, 42-40.
- Murphy restored order for the Garnet, knocking down a much-needed jumper to take a two-possession lead. However, Haverford kept attacking the paint, scoring a pair of unanswered layups to even the score with 3:30 left.
- Murphy came through for the Garnet once more, connecting on a crucial three-pointer to break a tie game with 3:09 to play. The Fords answered back with three points of their own to draw even until Murphy drilled a corner three-pointer with five seconds left to win the game.
