No. 21 Field Hockey Drops Heartbreaker to Dickinson

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The No. 21 Swarthmore College field hockey team fell 2-1 to Dickinson College on Saturday night. The Garnet dropped to 4-1 in Centennial Conference play, leaving no unbeaten teams remaining in the conference.

Avery Bloom tied the game for the Garnet with a score in the 50th minute, but the defense was unable to hold off Dickinson's offense, which responded with a game-winner in the 53rd minute.

Dickinson outshot the Garnet 8-4, with Josie Sarno making one save. Swarthmore held a 6-4 advantage in penalty corners, earning all six of its corners in the fourth quarter.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both offenses were at a standstill in an even first period. Dickinson attempted the only shot of the stanza, firing an attempt wide of the net.

- Sarno stepped up and made a heads-up save in the 19th minute to keep the game scoreless. The Red Devils fired a quick strike on goal, which was deflected away by the body of Sarno. Dickinson eventually broke through with the game's first goal, taking advantage of broken play after an errant pass deflected off the post in the 23rd minute. Annika Hoyer registered the lone Swarthmore shot, which was turned away by the goalie.

- Neither team registered a shot in a third quarter dominated by defense. Dickinson attempted one penalty corner, but was unable to generate any offense from it.

- The Garnet offense turned up the intensity in the fourth quarter. Hoyer and Castle fired a pair of shots wide in the opening minutes of the period. Swarthmore then got themselves on the board with the second of back-to-back penalty corners. Castle found the stick of Bloom, who buried an equalizer to even the score in the 50th minute.

- Dickinson got its goal back in the 53rd minute, scoring off a well-placed deflection from in front of the net. The Garnet registered four corners and generated three shots in the final four minutes, but were unable to even the score.
