FREDERICKSBURG, VA. - The Swarthmore College women's basketball team dropped its first of a two-game road trip against the University of Mary Washington, 68-46, on Monday afternoon. The Garnet jumped out to an early lead after the first quarter, but were outscored 19-3 in a decisive second quarter, which tilted the game in the Eagles favor.
Vianna Kanyamiheto-Watson led a trio of Swarthmore scorers in double figures. The rookie dropped a team-high 12 points, while Carly Murphy and Catherine Chadwell followed with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Raven Richardson grabbed 12 rebounds with three steals to pace the Garnet defense. The senior posted double-digit rebounds for the third time this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Chadwell and
Lily Czub kicked off the game with a couple jumpers to give the Garnet an early four-point edge. Later in the quarter, the Eagles found themselves in front until Chadwell hit from three to regain the lead. Swarthmore built on its advantage with consecutive Czub buckets, making it 17-12. They entered the first intermission with a three-point lead.
- Swarthmore struggled to maintain momentum in a challenging second quarter. The Eagles closed the final eight minutes of the stanza on a 15-0 swing, taking a commanding 34-21 lead over the visiting Garnet.
- Kanyamiheto-Watson helped provide her team with a jolt, hitting from deep in the opening minute of the third quarter. Moments later, Murphy added four-straight points to bring the Garnet deficit to 10 points. Swarthmore was unable to pull within single digits, but kept pace with the Eagles in an evenly matched quarter.
- Mary Washington put the Garnet away with 12-straight points to open the fourth quarter, building a 25-point advantage. Swarthmore punched back with eight-unanswered, but were unable to dig themselves out from its early deficit.
