Men’s Basketball Falls Short of Comeback Versus Gettysburg

SWARTHMORE, Pa.  - The Swarthmore College men's basketball team mounted a late rally but came up just short, falling 67-61 to Gettysburg College in a Centennial thriller on Saturday night. The Garnet were handed its first Centennial loss of the season as both squads drew even at 4-1 in conference play.

Trailing by 13 points with 1:44 left in the second, the Garnet cut its deficit to one possesion on a Nyle Coleman three-pointer with six seconds remaining. Swarthmore clawed back into the game with its swarming press, which forced several turnovers as the Bullets struggled to advance the ball past half court. Swarthmore outscored its opponent 16-7 in the final two minutes, but Gettysburg was able to escape with a tight victory.

Eddie Paquette was outstanding for the Garnet, leading all scorers with 22 points on a perfect 7-of-7 shooting. Zander Jimenez joined his teammate in double figures with 13 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Gettysburg jumped out to a commanding lead in the opening stretch of the first half. The Bullets started the game on a 24-9 run in the opening 10 minutes, before the Garnet began to figure things out offensively. Jonathan Stump and Jimenez added layups on consecutive possessions to spark a 11-2 counter punch for the home squad. Andrew Park then closed out the run with a layup before draining a transition three-pointer from the wing to close the gap to six points, 26-20.

- In a game filled with runs, Gettysburg saw momentum tilt in its favor to close the opening half. The Bullets headed into the locker room on a 13-4 swing, building a 39-24 advantage at intermission.

- Swarthmore climbed back into the game with a strong start to the second half. Paquette absorbed heavy contact for a tough two points, but missed his ensuing opportunity at the foul line. Caleb Aurelien then stole a possession for the Garnet, fighting for the offensive board before the ball found Paquette, who drained a three-pointer to score five points on one trip down the floor, 41-31.

- Despite a promising second-half start for Swarthmore, the Bullets quickly turned their fortunes around with six-unanswered points to build a 47-31 lead. The Garnet would slowly chip away at their deficit, but Gettysburg was able to maintain a double-digit lead until the final two minutes of regulation.

- Paquette willed his squad back into the game, earning a tough three points on an and-one layup before knocking down a much-needed triple. Jimenez then hit consecutive free throws to pull within six points at the 1:00 mark.

- Gettysburg had no antidote for an aggressive Swarthmore fullcourt press. The Bullets had three turnovers off inbound plays in the final 1:30, and had to burn several timeouts as they struggled to advance the ball past half court.

- Following a pair of free throws from Paquette, Aurelien forced a turnover off a Gettysburg inbound play before kicking the ball to Coleman for a big-time three-pointer with six seconds left. The bucket breathed life into Tarble Pavilion as the junior brought his team within one possession for the first time since the opening five minutes of the game.

- Gettysburg iced the game with a pair of clutch free throws in the final seconds to seal a narrow victory against a resilient Swarthmore squad.
