SWARTHMORE, PA. - The Swarthmore College women's basketball team dropped another tightly-contested battle to Dickinson College, 59-52, on Saturday afternoon. The Garnet held a lead early in the fourth quarter, but couldn't prevent a pivotal Red Devils' run to sway the contest.
The Garnet had four players in double figures. Carly Murphy led the way with 14 points on an efficient 7-of-10 shooting. Vianna Kanyamiheto-Watson followed with 14 points, while Lily Czub and Catherine Chadwell added 12 and 11, respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Early in the game, Czub had the hot hand with five points to give the Garnet an 8-3 lead in the opening minutes. The Red Devils pulled within a point after rattling off five-unanswered until Swarthmore countered with a Murphy bucket and a pair of Chadwell free throws to finish the stanza, 16-13.
- Dickinson found themselves in front with two-straight buckets to open the second quarter. The Red Devils maintained their advantage at the midway point of the stanza, before Kanyamiheto-Watson buried a go-ahead triple to regain the lead, 23-22.
- Both teams traded blows in a half that featured nine lead changes and two ties. The Red Devils took a two-point lead with a three at the 2:31 mark until the Garnet flipped the score with four-straight points. Swarthmore seemed poised to head into halftime with the lead before Dickinson scored four in the final 12-seconds to carry a two-point edge into the locker room, 31-29.
- Swarthmore kept pace with the Red Devils in a low-scoring third quarter. Murphy knocked down a pair of jumpers in the stanza to lead the way. The Garnet pulled within one with a pair of Claire Mathews free throws before intermission, making it 39-38.
- The Garnet opened the fourth with five-unanswered points after a Chadwell layup and Kanyamiheto-Watson three to provide a four-point edge. Dickinson then established control with an 11-0 run to build an insurmountable lead.
