Volleyball Bounces Back, Wins Three-Set Sweep at E-Town

ELIZABETHTOWN, PA. - The Swarthmore College volleyball team returned to the win column with a three-set victory at Elizabethtown College on Tuesday night. The Garnet wrapped up a four-game road swing with a much-needed win as they head home for this weekend's Swarthmore Invitational. 

Isabel Adam had another strong game to pace Swarthmore's offense, totaling a team-high 14 kills with a .237 hitting percentage. The sophomore has recorded double-digit kills in eight of her last nine contests. Alexia Enache and Keira Miles also contributed with eight kills, while Madeline Mountcastle set the tone with 22 assists to go along with five service aces. 

Melissa Eyer collected a team-high 17 digs, while Nicole Kim played a huge role on defense with 16 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Enache and Adam started the first stanza with back-to-back kills as they set the tone for an opening set win. Swarthmore jumped out to a commanding lead, before the Jays shrunk their deficit to three points. However, the Garnet took control of the set with eight-unanswered kills to build a 19-8 lead. Mountcastle showcased her serving ability, collecting four aces during the 8-0 stretch, which included a string of three-straight. Swarthmore ran away with the set, closing the opener with four-straight points, 25-11.

- Elizabethtown took a 3-1 advantage in the second set to mark its first lead of the evening. The Jays held an early edge until Swarthmore used a 5-1 rally to take an 11-10 lead. The Garnet added to its lead with four-straight points on an Adam kill, consecutive Angelina Heminway kills and an Eyer ace, making it 17-12. Miles put the finishing touches on the set with back-to-back kills to secure a 25-19 win. 

- Both teams were evenly matched in the third set until the Garnet used a 6-1 run to create a five-point advantage, 16-11. Adam stepped up during the run with four kills, including back-to-back strikes to cap off the advantage. With their backs against the walls, the Jays would make one final surge to knot the game at 18-18, and then eventually take a 23-22 lead. Despite momentum swinging towards Elizabethtown, the Garnet beared down and earned three-straight points to put away their opponent in three-sets, 25-23.

The Garnet (7-6) return home for their Swarthmore Invitational against Stockton University, Suffolk University and the University of Scranton on Friday and Saturday. This weekend will be the third and final home invitational of the season.
