SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College volleyball team dropped a non-conference match to William Paterson University, 3-2, at Tarble Pavilion on Tuesday night.
The Pioneers claimed the first set before the Garnet took the next two to go in front. However, WPU rallied to win back-to-back sets and the match. Three of the sets were decided by just two points.
Isabel Adam and
Keira Miles led Swarthmore with 14 kills apiece.
Emily Sun and
Madeline Mountcastle recorded 19 and 17 assists respectively. Four players reached double-digit digs with
Melissa Eyer (28) and Mountcastle (21) each surpassing the 20-mark.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet jumped out to a 7-4 lead in the opening set but the Pioneers came back with 10 of the next 14 points to take a 14-11 advantage. Trailing 16-13, Swarthmore scored four in a row to go ahead by one. The teams went back and forth until it was even at 22. WPU then tallied three of the last four points, including a pair of kills, to win the set 25-23.
- The Pioneers had the better of play early in the second set, taking a 13-7 edge. The Garnet rallied with an 8-2 run to tie it up at 15. Four different players notched a kill while
Nicole Kim and Sun each had a service ace. The lead changed hands multiple times until WPU had a 23-22 advantage. The Pioneers then made three consecutive errors, with
Zindzhi Montgomery picking up a block, and Swarthmore came away with the set, 25-23.
- WPU scored the first point of the third but the Garnet followed with five unanswered to go ahead 5-1. Kim had a pair of aces during the run. The Pioneers chipped away at the deficit and eventually evened the score at 14. WPU later strung together three points to take a two-point edge (21-19). Swarthmore answered with five of six to bring up set point (24-22). The Pioneers used a kill and an ace to tie the score but the Garnet came back with three of the next four to win the set, 27-25, on another Kim ace.
- Swarthmore led 12-7 in the fourth set but WPU fought back to an 18-18 deadlock. Adam registered a kill to give the Garnet the lead once more but the Pioneers responded with seven of the next eight to send the match to a decisive set with a 25-20 triumph.
- WPU got out to a 6-3 lead in the final set before Swarthmore scored four in a row to take a 7-6 advantage.
Alexia Enache tallied a kill and an ace during the stretch. The Garnet held an 8-7 edge when the Pioneers produced two kills and an ace to jump in front 10-8. After a kill by Adam got Swarthmore within one, WPU put the match away with four kills and a block for a 15-9 decision. The Pioneers compiled a .474 attack percentage in the final frame.
