SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College women's soccer team blanked visiting Transylvania University, 3-0, in its season opener on Friday night at Clothier Field Stadium.
The Garnet controlled play throughout, topping the Pioneers in shots, 29-2.
Celia Kanellakos led Swarthmore with a goal and an assist while
Charlotte Carleton and
Lillian Jarmosevich also found the back of the net.
Dahlia Bedward made one save to earn her first career shutout.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet outshot Transylvania, 16-0, in the opening half but it took nearly 44 minutes before Swarthmore was able to put one in the goal. The Pioneers' goalkeeper thwarted the Garnet with six saves but Kanellakos finally beat her with just 1:13 to go before halftime. Kanellakos won a loose ball and raced down the right side before ripping a shot into the left corner of the cage for a 1-0 Swarthmore lead.
- Carleton doubled the Garnet's advantage in the 54
th minute. She came up with a loose ball after a goal kick then sprinted past the defense before besting the keeper. In the 65
th minute, Swarthmore displayed slick passing up the middle of the field to take a 3-0 lead. Kanellakos found
Jordan Vrees with a pass then Vrees sprung Jarmosevich with a ball through the defense. It was the first collegiate goal for Jarmosevich and the first collegiate point for Vrees.
- Bedward registered her lone save of the evening in the 84
th minute to preserve the clean sheet.
