No. 22 Softball Muscles Past Messiah in NCAA Opener

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The No. 22 Swarthmore College softball team opened NCAA Tournament play with a 6-2 victory over Messiah University on Thursday afternoon.

Swarthmore's offense propelled its way to victory with a pair of runs in the opening two innings, and a four spot in the fourth. Iris Barone went 2-for-3 with two runs and two stolen bases, while Jordan Jackson drove home a game-high three runs. Olivia McClammy also went 3-for-3 at the dish, reaching base in all four plate appearances.

Lilly Goldberg tossed a complete game in her tournament debut. The first-year lasted seven innings with two earned runs on five hits and five punchouts in a winning effort.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore's defense erased a leadoff walk in the top of the first. After Goldberg struck out the following batter, McClammy delivered a strike to second base to catch the baserunner stealing. The first-year than induced a weak flyout to end the frame.

- Barone wreaked havoc on the basepaths after leading off the first with a single. The junior stole second, advanced to third on a McClammy hit and then touched home on a double steal, making it 1-0.

- The Garnet defense escaped another jam in the second inning, despite surrendering consecutive singles to open the frame. Swarthmore was gifted an out on a sacrifice bunt, before Barone doubled up a runner at home on a flyball to end the inning.

- Swarthmore tacked on another run in the second after Kate Borza worked a leadoff walk, and Grace Taylor singled down the right-field line. Barone then drove home the team's second run with a single up the middle, 2-0.

- Goldberg settled in with an uneventful third and fourth inning. The Garnet then built on their advantage with a four-run fourth inning. Jackson provided the key hit with a bases-clearing, three-run double to right center field. Emily Bertrand then touched home on a wild pitch to cap off the big inning, 6-0.

- The Falcons threatened with a pair of runs in the sixth inning, but Goldberg bounced back with three-straight outs to limit the damage. The rookie then capped off the afternoon with a 1-2-3 seventh inning.
