HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Swarthmore College women's lacrosse team had its season come to an end with a 16-5 loss at No. 19 Haverford College in the first round of the Centennial Conference Tournament on Tuesday evening. The Garnet finish the campaign with a 10-7 record, reaching double-digit wins for the second time in three seasons.
Swarthmore, the sixth seed, was unable to get anything going versus the third-seeded Fords, falling to Haverford for the second time in four days after the teams met in the regular season finale. Despite the Garnet owning a decisive 18-5 edge in draw controls, Swarthmore could not convert its possessions into goals, recording just 16 shots on the cage, 12 of which were turned away by the Fords goalkeeper. Haverford opened the contest with a 7-0 run and the Garnet could not recover.
Isabela Bloomquist led the Swarthmore attack with four points on one goal and three assists. The three helpers propelled Bloomquist into the program's all-time top-10 list. She finishes her standout career in the top-10 in goals (162), assists (44), and points (206), one of just seven players currently on all three lists. The senior is just the ninth player in program history to register 200 points in a career.
Elizabeth Zack found the back of the net and also tallied 10 draw controls to jump into second place on the career draw controls list with 172.
Sophie Finkelstein also scored a goal in her final collegiate game.
Mia Holland wrapped up a strong career on the defensive side of the ball with three ground balls, two caused turnovers, and five draw controls.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet won six of the seven draws in the opening quarter but it was the Fords who scored all six goals in the period. The Haverford defense allowed just seven shot attempts by Swarthmore and pressured the Garnet into five turnovers. The Fords extended their run into the second stanza, scoring 31 seconds in for a 7-0 advantage.
-
Zoe Crawford broke Swarthmore's drought at the 11:24 mark. However, Haverford responded with three unanswered tallies to up the margin to nine (10-1). Zack beat the goalkeeper with help from Bloomquist with 6:11 on the clock to make it 10-2. The Fords did not allow the Garnet to gain momentum though, keeping them off the board for the rest of the half and scoring at the 4:07 mark for an 11-2 lead at the break.
- The Haverford defense continued to stifle the Swarthmore attack in the third quarter, limiting the Garnet to just four shots. The Fords posted three goals in the frame to take a 14-2 advantage into the fourth. Swarthmore saw its best offensive results in the final period with goals by
Annabel Stifler, Bloomquist, and Finkelstein, but it was too late for the Garnet to erase the deficit.
