Softball Sweeps Past Washington in Home Finale, McClammy Homers Twice to Break Single-Season Record

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College softball team earned a pair of victories in a double-header sweep over Washington College on Tuesday. The Garnet won the opener 5-0, while powering their way to a 7-3 win in the nightcap.

Lilly Goldberg led the Garnet to victory with her second-straight complete game shutout. The first-year tossed seven scoreless frames with just four hits, two walks and three strikeouts. Emily Bertrand helped supply the offense with a pair of RBI singles to headline a five-run effort.

The Garnet then clinched the double-header sweep behind a pair of homers from Olivia McClammy. The senior was responsible for four of the team's RBI, while launching her sixth and seventh home runs of the season to break the program's single-season home runs record.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Swarthmore escaped the first inning behind a pair of excellent defensive plays. Jordan Jackson made a diving catch in the outfield for the first out, while McClammy made an acrobatic grab at first base to catch an errant throw, before applying the tag to a baserunner.

- The Shorewomen took advantage of a Swarthmore error, rallying for a pair of unanswered runs in the second inning. Lane Barron then responded with a clean 1-2-3 frame to keep the Garnet within striking distance in the third inning.

- The Garnet tied the game with a couple runs in the third inning. Bertrand singled home her third run of the afternoon to open the scoring, while Lia Fong singled to deep shortstop to tie the game, 2-2. Barron then overcame a couple hits to shut down the Shorewomen in the fourth.

- The Garnet threatened in the fourth inning, but had a runner tossed out at home to end the inning. McClammy then made an incredible play in the fifth, sliding to make a catch on a weak pop up and then tossing the ball to first to double off the runner.

- McClammy came through in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run homer to break a 2-2 tie. Jackson started the inning with a single to right field before touching home on a moonshot to left field, which bounced off the wall of a nearby dorm building.

- The Shorewomen trimmed their deficit to one in the sixth until the Garnet put the game away with three more. Swarthmore scored their first run on an error, while McClammy smoked another two-run shot to dead center field to take a 7-3 lead.
