No. 17 Men’s Lacrosse Blows Past WAC, Captures Third-Straight Centennial Win

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The No. 17 Swarthmore College men's lacrosse team captured its third-straight conference victory with a 15-8 win over Washington College on Wednesday. The Garnet improved to 4-2 in the Centennial, and currently sit in the fourth seed with two games remaining. 

The Garnet fell victim to another slow start, falling behind 4-2 in the opening stanza. However, Swarthmore batted back in the second and third quarters to outscore the Shoremen, 10-2. Drew Tyson, who made 16 saves on the evening, held Washington scoreless with five saves in a pivotal third quarter. 

Matthew Martinez matched a career-high nine ground balls and was 17-for-17 on faceoffs to headline a dominant performance for Swarthmore's specialists. The Garnet conceded only one faceoff, winning 26-of-27 attempts. 

Clay Almgren and Ryder Maston each scored four goals to lead the attack, while Danny Lowe notched three goals and one assist for his second hat trick of the season. Rex Mabbs was also active on the offensive end, collecting a game-high three assists. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Shoremen controlled the opening quarter with a 4-2 advantage. Washington scored the opening three goals with tallies at the 13:23, 11:51 and 6:27 marks. Almgren and Maston notched the opening two scores for the Garnet in between the Shoremen's fourth tally, making it 4-2 after the first. 

- Swarthmore tilted momentum in its favor with three-unanswered goals to open the second. Lowe netted the first score with 10:15 left, while Almgren tied the game with an assist from Mabbs, less than a minute later. Owen George then gave the Garnet their first advantage with 8:19 remaining until the visitors regained the lead with consecutive goals. Swarthmore closed the stanza with tallies from Nolan Ohrman and Almgren to take a one-goal edge into halftime. 

- The Garnet scored five-unanswered goals in the third quarter to run away with the lead. Lowe kickstarted the rally with a goal at the 9:34 mark, while Maston, Ronan Butler, Almgren and Ohrman all followed with scores to build a six-goal lead. Tyson made five saves in the quarter to keep the Shoremen off the board, 12-6. 

- Midway through the fourth, Washington put an end to a 28-minute scoring drought with the opening goal of the quarter. The Garnet responded with two goals from Maston and a Lowe score, before the Shoremen added a goal before the final horn.
