Softball Sweeps Haverford Behind 20 Combined Runs

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Swarthmore College softball team overpowered Haverford College with 20 combined runs in a double-header sweep on Tuesday. The Garnet won the opener 5-1, while outslugging the Fords 15-7 in the finale.

Lilly Goldberg earned her 12th victory of the season with another complete-game outing. The first-year allowed one run on five hits with eight strikeouts, while her offense provided five late-inning runs to topple the Fords in the opener. Catherine Heflin came through with the big hit for Swarthmore, slugging a three-run homer in the sixth to build a five-run advantage.

In game two, the Garnet exploded for eight runs in the second to propel themselves to a series sweep. Haverford clawed back within two runs in the fifth, but could not keep down Swarthmore's red-hot offense, who rallied for six runs in the sixth to put the game away. Olivia McClammy had four RBI in the finale, while Jordan Jackson drove in three on two hits. Kate Borza was also a spark for the Garnet, reaching base four times with two doubles and two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Goldberg walked the tightrope in the first couple innings, allowing a runner to advance into scoring position in both frames.  However, the first-year maintained her composure and escaped both innings unscathed.

- Haverford threatened again in the third inning. The Fords advanced its leadoff hitter to third base with nobody out after a leadoff single and an error, but Goldberg navigated out of the jam with a pop out, flyout and strike out to keep the game scoreless after three.

- Swarthmore's offense got off to a slow start in the first four innings with just two hits and were unable to advance a baserunner past first base. The Garnet bats eventually returned to form with two runs in the fifth on four hits. Iris Barone singled up the middle to plate the opening run, while Jackson followed with another RBI knock, making it 2-0.

- Goldberg responded in the bottom of the fifth with a shutdown inning, retiring the Fords in order. Swarthmore then broke the game open with consecutive singles from Emily Bertrand and Lia Fong, followed by a three-run homer from Heflin.

- The Fords broke through with a run in the sixth, but were sent down quietly in the seventh to drop the opening contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- After the Fords took a 2-0 lead in the first, Borza opened a three hit performance with a leadoff single to spark an eight-run second inning. Grace Taylor and Ava Babcock then reached to load the bases, before Barone singled home the first run and Jackson worked a walk to even the score. McClammy then followed with a go-ahead, two-run single, while Fong added two more with a double to right field. Borza, who opened the inning with a single, closed the rally with a two-run double down the left field line, making it 8-2.

- The Fords answered back with two more in the second to trim their deficit to four runs. Fong then took over in the circle for the third inning. The first-year walked a pair, but escaped the inning unharmed to slow down the Fords' offense.

- Fong was hit by a pitch to open the fourth, and then advanced to third on Borza's second double of the game. Taylor then grounded out to short to add another insurance tally, 9-4.

- Haverford was retired 1-2-3 in the bottom of the fourth, but clawed back with three runs in the fifth. Hanging onto a two-run advantage, Swarthmore put away the Fords with a six-run sixth inning. Borza, who reached base in all four appearances, started the rally with a leadoff walk, and later came home to score on a Serafina Tinio hit by pitch. Swarthmore plated its next run on an error, before Jackson and McClammy each doubled home a pair to put the game out of reach, 15-7.
