SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's lacrosse team secured another crucial conference victory on Saturday, defeating McDaniel College 15-9. With three games remaining, the Garnet continue to hold the final playoff seed in the Centennial standings.
Neither team led by more than two scores until the Garnet rattled off five-unanswered goals to end the third quarter. McDaniel tied the game with 9:51 remaining in the third, but Swarthmore stormed back with five goals in the final six minutes of the stanza.
Annabel Stifler and
Isabela Bloomquist each scored twice during the stretch, while
Claire Long rocketed a free-position attempt past the goalie.
Bloomquist and Stifler both led the offense with four goals, while Long scored twice to headline eight different scorers.
Brooke Carrier made some big saves for the Garnet, finishing with seven stops in a winning-effort.
Mia Holland also had a stellar defensive performance with six caused turnovers, five ground balls and seven draw controls, while
Elizabeth Zack secured a career-high nine draw controls.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore built themselves a two-goal cushion after the opening quarter. Stifler scored in the opening minute, while
Abigail Love added another tally at the 10:47 mark.
Brooke Carrier made a couple nice saves in the stanza as the Garnet attack outshot their opponent 13-5.
- The Garnet notched another early score in the opening minute of the second. Long wasted no time, netting a powerplay goal just 22-seconds into the quarter. After being shutout in the opening frame, the Green Terror ended their 17-minute scoreless drought with a couple unanswered scores. Swarthmore then countered with a
Kela Watts goal on a nice connection from Zack with 7:10 left. McDaniel shrunk its deficit back to one with a pair of scores sandwiched between a Bloomquist goal. The senior beat the goalie after an excellent find from
Aubree Daugherty with 32-seconds left. However, Swarthmore surrendered a final score with three seconds left, making it 5-4.
- Following intermission, Daugherty netted the opening score with an assist from Bloomquist. The Green Terror then answered with a score, but were denied on a game-tying attempt by Carrier, who made an incredible stop off a free position. The Green Terror kept applying pressure, eventually evening the score on another free position with 9:51 left. Swarthmore retook the lead on a Stifler goal at the 5:34 mark, and then added a powerplay goal from Bloomquist just moments later. Swarthmore began to pull away with three late goals in the stanza. Long fired a free position past the keeper with 1:38 left, Stifler then completed her hat trick at 34-seconds, while Bloomquist notched her hat trick with three seconds left, 11-6.
- Bloomquist added to her team's tally with a powerplay goal in the opening minutes of the fourth to put her team ahead by six. Despite a brief power outage at Clothier Stadium, the Garnet offense continued to run at a high-efficiency with three more goals to close out the game.
