SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College baseball team improved to 3-0 in conference play with a 9-7 triumph over Ursinus College at Clothier Baseball Field on Tuesday.
The Garnet came back from a 4-1 deficit in the contest. The teams traded the lead in the middle innings before Swarthmore went in front for good in the sixth.
Aidan Sullivan recorded his third career four-hit game, going 4-for-5 at the plate with a double, a stolen base, and two RBI.
Max Roffwarg,
Zac Kahn, and
Nathaniel Kittredge all tallied two hits. Roffwarg drove in three runs and scored twice.
Jack Bowling pitched four stellar innings on the mound in relief and earned the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bears opened the scoring in the second. Ursinus registered an RBI single and had another run come in on a wild pitch for a 2-0 lead. The Garnet got on the board in the bottom of the second when
Ian Born hit a two-out RBI single to right field.
- The Bears upped their advantage to three with two more runs in the third. Ursinus scored both runs on a sacrifice fly with the runner from second hustling around third as the Swarthmore defense lazily got the ball back to the infield.
-
Benjamin Buchman brought the Garnet within two again with an RBI single in the bottom of the third. Roffwarg tied the score at four with a two-run single to center in the fourth.
Leor Kedar then came home on a fielder's choice in the next play to give Swarthmore its first lead, 5-4.
- The Bears regained the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth. Ursinus led off with a homer to center to tie then later went in front on a balk. However, the Garnet responded in the bottom of the frame, scoring on an error to even the score at six.
- Swarthmore went ahead for good in the sixth inning. Kedar smacked a lead-off triple to right then scored on a Roffwarg sac fly. The Garnet added two insurance runs in the eighth as Sullivan singled in a run and Roffwarg scampered home on a wild pitch.
- After the Swarthmore pitching staff allowed six runs in the first five innings, Bowling took the hill in the sixth and shut down the Bears offense. He retired the side in order in the sixth, allowed just one baserunner in the seventh on a single, and posted another 1-2-3 frame in the eighth. Ursinus was able to get a run back off of him in the ninth with a lead-off triple followed by an error but Bowling then sat down three straight hitters to finish off the win.
