Softball Sweeps Widener in Offensive Explosion, Combine for 19 Runs

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College softball team swept past Widener University with a pair of dominant victories on Tuesday.  The Garnet slugged to a 9-1 victory in the opener, while rallying for a 10-2 victory in the finale.

Lilly Goldberg backed up her Centennial Player of the Week selection with another stellar performance in the opener. The first-year earned the victory, while only allowing three hits and one unearned run in 5.2 innings pitched. She has not allowed an earned run in her previous 16.2 innings of work. 

SWARTHMORE 9, WIDENER 1 (6 Innings)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Goldberg pitched 4.1 hitless innings to start the game, dominating the Pride's lineup and keeping them scoreless through the first five frames.

- Iris Barone singled in the game's first run in the second inning. The Garnet then added two more in the third on a throwing error and an RBI single by Emily Bertrand, making it 3-0.

- Swarthmore added two more runs in the fourth. Barone singled in her second run of the game, and Avery McClure drove in another with a sacrifice fly, 5-0. 

-The Pride scored an unearned run in the sixth, but Swarthmore responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning to put Widener away. Jordan Jackson singled in the first run, and Ava Babcock was hit by a pitch to bring in another. Kate Borza followed with a single up the middle to make it 8-1, and Serafina Tinio ended the game with a sacrifice fly, 9-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Lane Barron shut down the Pride through the first three innings before the Garnet took the lead with a Regan Valenzuela single in the third. Catherine Heflin then broke the game open in the fourth with a two-run homer to spark a seven-run inning. McClure later added a two-run double, and McClammy drove in another run with a single. The Garnet capped off the inning with two more runs, bringing their total to eight unanswered. 

- The Pride rallied in the fifth with two runs, but couldn't slow down Swarthmore's hot bats. The Garnet answered in the bottom of the inning, adding two runs with RBI singles from Valenzuela and Olivia McClammy to seal the win, 10-2.
