Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Slow Start Foils Women's Basketball at Washington

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Swarthmore College women's basketball team was unable to climb back from an early deficit and suffered a 60-39 loss at Washington College in Centennial Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

The Shorewomen scored the first nine points of the contest and held the advantage for the remainder of the game. The Garnet struggled to get to the basket, recording just 10 points in the paint and putting up 29 three-point attempts as they tried to get back in it. Swarthmore pressured Washington into 22 turnovers, scoring 14 points off the miscues, but the Shorewomen were still able to pull away for the victory.

Catherine Chadwell led the way for the Garnet, tying her career best with 15 points. She shot 5-of-10 from the field, including 3-of-6 from beyond the arc. Vianna Kanyamiheto-Watson finished with eight points as her four-game double-digit streak came to an end. Raven Richardson chipped in with five points and five rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Washington opened the game with a 9-0 run across the initial 4:21 of play. The Shorewomen were 4-for-6 from the floor and sank their lone three-point shot while Swarthmore missed its first four field goal attempts. Kanyamiheto-Watson got the Garnet on the board with a triple at the 5:26 mark to spark an 11-5 Swarthmore bounce-back. Chadwell and Claire Mathews also drilled threes during the stretch and the Garnet closed the gap to three (14-11). Washington closed the first with a jumper to lead 16-11 entering the second.

- Both teams made a bucket to begin the second period and the score was 18-13 with 8:29 on the clock. The Shorewomen then pulled away with a 15-1 surge to take a commanding 33-14 advantage with 1:46 left before halftime. The home team made five of its nine shots, including three of five from long range. Swarthmore was off the mark on eight attempts with four turnovers during the skid. The Garnet ended their drought with three straight points to trail 33-17 at the break.

- Swarthmore scored seven of the first nine points in the third to cut the deficit to 11 (35-24) with 7:39 remaining. Kanyamiheto-Watson hit a three with Lily Czub and Richardson each adding two points. However, Washington cut off the Garnet's momentum with a 16-5 stretch to end the stanza and take a 51-29 lead into the fourth. The Shorewomen shot 6-of-8 during the run while limiting Swarthmore to just 1-for-6 from the field. The Garnet outscored Washington in the final quarter, including a pair of threes from Chadwell, but it was not enough to catch the Shorewomen.
