Volleyball Falls to Gettysburg in Centennial Tournament Opener

SWARTHMORE, PA. - The Swarthmore College volleyball team had its championship hopes come to an end with a 3-0 loss to Gettysburg College on Wednesday. The fourth-seeded Garnet end the season with a 17-12 overall record.

Madeline Mountcastle was a bright spot for the Garnet, tallying her 1,000th career assist with a career-high 32 on the evening. The senior graduates as the ninth player in program history to eclipse the milestone.

Isabel Adam led the team with 14 kills, while Alexia Enache joined her in double figures with 11 total. Lois Matsukawa and Maya Sheridan also contributed a pair of aces to help sustain the offense.

Melissa Eyer wrapped up a tremendous sophomore campaign with a 17-dig performance. She ends the season with 516 digs, becoming just the fifth player in program history to record 500 in a single season. She will open her junior season with 942 digs, just 58 away from the 1,000 career milestone.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Swarthmore got off to a fast start in front of its home crowd, rallying for three-straight points with kills from Adam and Enache. Adam then capped off the fast start with an ace, before the Bullets got rolling. The set seemed to be tilted in the home team's favor after a Mountcastle kill sparked another 3-0 swing to build a four-point lead, 8-4. Both teams traded runs and exchanged leads until the Garnet used a 5-1 stretch to take a late four-point edge, 22-18. Gettysburg then stunned the Garnet, pulling off a 6-1 tilt to steal the opening set, 25-23.

- The Bullets picked up where they left off in the opening set, jumping out to a 3-0 advantage in set two. Gettysburg quickly distanced themselves with a 9-4 lead, but the Garnet countered with three-unanswered points to slow momentum. Swarthmore would remain within an arm's length of the Bullets until a 6-2 stretch provided the visitors some separation, 20-14. The Garnet kept battling with a 7-2 run to pull within one point of Gettysburg after a Zindzhi Montgomery kill, 23-22. However, the comeback came too late as the Bullets escaped with another 25-23 win.

- Gettysburg began the third set on a 7-3 run, before the Garnet blitzed the Bullets with five-straight points. Keira Miles added a kill during the stretch, while the Garnet took advantage of four Gettysburg errors. Midway through the set, the Bullets found themselves in front with three-straight points, 15-13.
