No. 12 Women’s Soccer Clinches Playoff Berth in Dickinson Showdown

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The No. 12 Swarthmore College women's soccer team overcame a talented Dickinson College offense in an impressive 3-1 victory on Wednesday afternoon. The Garnet stand tall as the only unbeaten team remaining in the Centennial Conference with a perfect 7-0 mark, holding an eight-point edge over the Red Devils and securing a spot in the Centennial Tournament.

Celia Kanellakos, Ava Gizzie and Charlotte Carleton provided the scoring as the Garnet scored three-unanswered tallies to evaporate an early Dickinson lead. Gizzie extended their goal streak to nine-straight games, notching their 10th goal of the season. The senior tied Marin McCoy '18 for the most consecutive games with a goal in program history, ranking third all-time in Centennial history. Nicole Jensen was also credited with an assist on Gizzie's score, logging her fifth-straight game with a point.

Dahlia Bedward was exceptional in goal, making seven saves and several highlight-reel stops. Despite allowing an early goal, the senior kept her offense in the game and played an essential role in an impressive comeback win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore survived an early onslaught of offense from the Red Devils to open the game. Despite allowing the opening score in the fourth minute, Bedward made a couple fantastic saves to keep the Garnet within striking distance. The senior keeper came through with a diving stop in the sixth minute, and then made a leaping stop in the 10th minute.

- While Dickinson's offense got off to a fast start, the Red Devils were unable to keep the Garnet attack quiet for long. In the 14th minute, Gizzie nearly cashed in on a free kick opportunity after playing the ball on goal from just outside the box. Kanellakos then ripped a shot from center in the 17th minute, but had her attempt saved by the keeper.

- Moments after Kanellakos had her first attempt saved, the sophomore found the back of the net for the seventh time this season with a strike in the 18th minute. Liesel Blau played the ball to Haley Lewinski, who chipped the ball to Kanellakos from midfield. Kanellakos then unleashed a shot from just outside the box, burying her strike just below the crossbar to even the score.

- Lillian Jarmosevich helped preserve the opening-half draw with a team save in the 28th minute. The ball was played on net to the right of the keeper, but was harmlessly kicked out of play by the rookie defender.

- Early in the second half, Gizzie collected the game-winning score after touches from Carleton and Jensen in the 51st minute. Carleton controlled a bouncing ball near midfield and then played the ball to Jensen, who found Gizzie cutting towards the middle of the box. Gizzie maneuvered past a defender, and then navigated a shot past the keeper as they fell to the turf.

- Bedward kept the Garnet in front with a couple tricky saves in the 55th and 59th minutes. The senior made a diving stop on a deflection that was slowly spinning towards the goal line. She then came through with another diving save, moments later.

- Swarthmore tacked on an insurance goal in the 61st minute. Lewinski registered her second assist of the afternoon with a perfectly-placed corner, which connected with the head of Carleton to give the Garnet a 3-1 edge.
