Women’s Basketball Shuts Down Mary Washington Behind Stellar Defense

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's basketball team stifled Mary Washington's offense with a 54-37 victory on Saturday afternoon. The Garnet held the Eagles to their second-lowest point total and shooting percentage of the season.

Mary Washington shot 22.6 percent from the field and 2-for-14 from beyond the arc. Swarthmore's high-pressure defense forced the Eagles into poor decisions, while making the visitors settle for lower-percentage shots. Mary Washington was held scoreless for over 10-straight minutes in the third and fourth quarter.

Alyssa Hayashi led the way with a well-rounded performance. The senior scored a game-high 13 points with nine rebounds and four assists. Katelyn Becker also scored in double figures with 10 points, while shooting 3-for-5 from the field. Becker scored eight of her 10 points in the opening five minutes of the first quarter.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet raced out to a 14-7 run in the first five minutes of the first quarter. Becker tallied eight points with a pair of three pointers to headline the team's hot start. Hayashi then knocked down a pair of free throws, while Raven Richardson closed the quarter with a layup to finish the stanza with a nine-point lead, 18-9.

- Swarthmore shot 54.5 percent in the opening quarter, while holding its opponent to 23.5 percent on four field goals. The Garnet defense was a major problem for the Eagles, who turned the ball over eight times in the opening 10 minutes of action.

- After Anna Hansson opened the second quarter with a bucket, Mary Washington began to claw back with a 6-2 run to pull within seven points. However, the Garnet kept their distance between the Eagles as they carried a seven-point advantage into halftime, 29-22.

- Hayashi scored the team's first four points of the third quarter. Mary Washington pulled within four in the stanza, but a Norah Wingfield layup expanded their lead to six after three quarters, 37-31. The Eagles were held scoreless for the final 4:32 of the third.

- Swarthmore opened the fourth quarter on a 14-0 run to put away the Eagles, 50-31. Hayashi capped off the rally with seven-straight points, including a three-pointer with 4:37 left. Mary Washington finally put an end to its scoring drought with 3:35 left in regulation. The Garnet held the Eagles scoreless for just over 10-straight minutes to seal the victory.
