Women’s Basketball Outshot by Bears in Centennial Loss

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's basketball team dropped their first of two meetings with Ursinus College, 72-43, on Wednesday night. The Bears have won their past four encounters with the Garnet.

The Bears led from start to finish as they built on a fast start. Ursinus had the hot hand all night, shooting 52.8 percent from the field compared to 28.1 percent from the Garnet.

Carly Murphy was the lone Garnet in double figures with a team-high 10 points. Alyssa Hayashi followed with nine, while Anna Hansson added eight points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Ursinus raced out to a fast start with an 8-0 rally in the opening two minutes of the first quarter. The Bears hit a pair of triples during the swing to build a commanding lead. Following a timeout, Hansson put Swarthmore on the board with a jumper, while Hayashi shortly followed with a layup. The Bears wrapped up the opening stanza with a 19-6 advantage, while shooting 58.3 percent compared to 20-percent from the Garnet.

- The Bears got off to another dominant start to open the second with 12-unanswered points to start the quarter. Murphy then put her squad on track with back-to-back threes to slow down the visitor's momentum. Moments later, Gendler added on another triple for the team's ninth-straight point, 31-15.

- Ursinus closed the final three minutes on a 10-2 run to increase their lead to 24 points. The Bears hit a pair of back-breaking threes in the final 40-seconds to derail any positive momentum for the Garnet, 41-17. The visitors shot 61.5 percent in the opening half.

- Hayashi scored the first four points of the quarter for the Garnet as both teams traded buckets in the third. Katelyn Becker then connected from long range after picking up a loose ball to decrease the team's deficit to 21 points. Rebekah Gendler cashed in on an and-one layup before the end of the stanza as the Garnet won the quarter by a point. The Bears held a 23-point advantage heading into the final stanza, 53-30.

- Despite a pair of buckets from Hansson, the Bears opened the final quarter on an 11-4 run to increase their lead to 30 points. Swarthmore then countered with a 9-4 run, which was capped off by a Gendler three-pointer.
