Women’s Soccer Silences Gettysburg in Conference Opener

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's soccer team began its Centennial Conference schedule with a 1-0 shutout victory at Gettysburg College on Saturday night.

Ava Gizzie provided the game's lone goal in the 63rd minute to send the Garnet home with a victory. The sophomore netted their team-leading fifth goal of the season and has scored in four of the team's six games to open the season. They are currently tied for second in the Centennial Conference in goals.

Sofie Aird earned her first victory of the season after battling to a draw in her first two starts. The sophomore recorded a pair of saves, while the team's defense was outstanding at limiting scoring chances.

The Garnet dominated scoring chances with a 24-4 advantage in shots. Swarthmore also held an 8-2 differential in corner attempts. Gettysburg was held without a shot for the first 54 minutes of action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore's offense applied pressure early in the opening half. Keren Maze had her free kick turned away from 35-yards out in the third minute. Gizzie then had their strike from center corralled by the keeper in the ninth minute.

- Later in the stanza, Charlotte Carleton fired a shot from just outside the box, but had her attempt smothered by the keeper. The Garnet held a 12-0 shot advantage in the first half, but only registered three shots on goal.

- Following halftime, Celia Kanellakos nearly put the Garnet in front with a rocket on goal in the 46th minute. Kanellakos fired a strike just below the crossbar, but the attempt was deflected out of bounds by the keeper.

- Aird made her first save in the 61st minute off a deflected shot. Gettysburg attempted a shot from just outside the box, but the ball was deflected harmlessly towards Swarthmore's keeper.

- The Garnet capitalized off a Gettysburg mistake for the game's lone goal in the 63rd minute. The Bullets had an errant pass intercepted by Sydney Ross deep in Swarthmore's attacking zone. Ross then tried to play a pass to Carleton on the right side, but had the ball poked to the center of the box by a Bullets defender. Fortunately for the Garnet, the Gettysburg deflection found the foot of Gizzie, who made the Bullets pay with the game-winning goal.

- Aird was forced to make one last save in the 71st minute. The Bullets lobbed a shot on goal from well outside the box, which was gathered easily by Aird for her second save. The Garnet defense did a phenomenal job of protecting their keeper the entire night.
