No. 16 Men’s Soccer Dominates Wilkes, Yamabe Scores Hat Trick

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The No. 16 Swarthmore College men's soccer team flexed its national ranking with a 7-0 victory over Wilkes University on Tuesday night. The Garnet remained unbeaten on the season through the first seven games.

Len Yamabe continued his scorching sophomore campaign with his first-career hat trick and second multi-goal game of the season. Yamabe matched his rookie season goal total in one game, while doubling his sophomore total with six goals on the season.

Toshiro Kenney, Tejas Sarna, Adrien Marcelli and Joseph Eyiolowope also added scores as five different players found the back of the net for Swarthmore. The Garnet combined for the program's most goals in a single game since scoring nine against Immaculata in 2011.

A trio of Swarthmore goalkeepers combined for the team's third shutout of the season. Christian Bignotti made one save in 45-minutes of action, while Logan Aboudara and Eli Cogan split a clean second half. The Garnet outshot their opponent 30-5, while recording 13 shots on goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Yamabe set the tone in the ninth minute with his first of three scores. The sophomore played the ball into the box off a corner kick and banked the ball off a Wilkes defender and past the keeper.

- Kenney increased Swarthmore's lead just moments later in the 12th minute. Nicholas Matese helped break free Kenney with a beautiful pass from midfield. The junior then beat one defender, before placing the ball perfectly through the keeper's legs for the score. Matese was credited with an assist for his first collegiate point.

- Yamabe found his second goal in the 24th minute after an excellent pass from Joost Almekinders. The midfielder set up his fellow sophomore perfectly with a beautiful cross from 30-yards out. Yamabe then gathered the ball inside the box and made a move to beat the keeper for the team's third score.

- Sarna joined the fun with a goal in the 52nd minute to open the second half. Almekinders showcased his extraordinary playmaking ability once again with a well-placed chip to Sarna, who broke away from the defense for an easy score.

- A few minutes later, Marcelli added to his season total with a goal in the 55th minute. Sarna passed the ball to Nate Kim, who touched the ball to Marcelli at the top of the box. Marcelli then buried a strike to the right post to give Swarthmore a five-goal advantage. Marcelli tallied his fourth goal of the season, while Kim notched his second assist.

- Eyiolowope celebrated his first goal of the season in the 66th minute. Kaito Hikino carried the ball to the near post, before finding Eyiolowope with a perfect centering pass at the opposite end. The junior found the back of the net to put the Garbet ahead by six goals.

- Yamabe ended the game much like he started things with his third score of the game. The sophomore received a touch from Hikino and then snuck his shot past the keeper for the team's seventh goal.
