SALISBURY, Md. – The Swarthmore College volleyball team opened the 2024 campaign with a 3-0 sweep of Mount Aloysius College at Salisbury University's Margie Knight Classic on Friday night.
The Garnet dominated the first set, posting a .333 team hitting percentage while limiting the Mounties to a -.250 conversion rate, to take the lead. Swarthmore pulled out a close second set and cruised to the victory in the third.
Alexia Enache led Swarthmore with 11 kills while
Izzy Adam recorded nine kills and a massive .533 attack percentage.
Emily Sun racked up 15 assists and
Melissa Eyer contributed with 13 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet trailed 3-2 early before embarking on a monster 15-2 run to take a commanding 17-5 advantage. Enache led the way with three kills and a service ace while
Angelina Heminway produced a pair of aces. Mount Aloysius bounced back to take three of the next four points but Swarthmore followed with a 7-1 spurt to win the set, 25-9.
- The Garnet got out to a 5-4 edge in the second set. The Mounties had a 6-1 stretch to go ahead 10-6 but Swarthmore took control again with a 10-2 surge. Adam sparked the run with four kills and the Garnet had a 16-12 lead. Mount Aloysius tallied four in a row to even it up at 16. The teams went back and forth until the Mounties were in front 22-20. Swarthmore powered forward with a 5-1 rally to come back and take the frame, 25-23. Adam totaled two more kills and the Garnet benefitted from three attack errors.
- Swarthmore carried the momentum into the third set, jumping out to an 12-2 lead. Adam dropped in a pair of aces and Enache posted three kills during the stretch. Mount Aloysius was only able to get within eight the rest of the way as the Garnet coasted to a 25-14 decision to clinch the match.
