Field Hockey Drops Season Opener to No. 4 Salisbury

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The No. 21 Swarthmore College field hockey team dropped its season opener versus No. 4 Salisbury University, 6-1, on Friday afternoon. 

Hayley Harris tallied the lone goal for the Garnet with a fourth quarter score.off an assist from Magdelana Jordan. The Garnet outshot Salisbury 17-12 courtesy of a 15-3 advantage in the second half. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Salisbury struck first on a breakaway goal with 10:52 remaining in the first quarter. The nationally-ranked Sea Gulls got behind the Garnet defense before beating the goalie high to the opposite post. The Sea Gulls added one more in the final minute after a strike from center deflected off a Swarthmore stick and found the top of the cage. 

- The Garnet defense fought off a couple corner attempts early in the second quarter. Swarthmore threatened on a corner attempt midway through the stanza, but had a Sarah Cooper shot turned away by the goalie. Salisbury added two scores to double its lead heading into intermission, 4-0. 

- Swarthmore threatened with a flurry of shots early in the third quarter. Following a corner attempt, Jordan had a shot blocked and Sophia Hitchingham had consecutive shots turned away by the goalie. Following another corner, Katherine Kohn had an attempt saved before Sarah Cooper was robbed on a miraculous save off a penalty stroke. Copper hit the post and then watched the ball deflect off the goalie several times before staying out of the cage. Moments later, Salisbury answered at the other end with their fifth goal.  

- Salisbury scored their sixth-unanswered goal to open the fourth quarter. Harris then countered with Swarthmore's first score of the season with five minutes remaining. After taking the corner attempt, Harris received a pass from Jordan at the corner of the cage and pushed the ball past the goalie for the team's lone score.
