No. 9 Men’s Lacrosse’s NCAA Tournament Run Ends at No. 1 Salisbury, Mabbs Breaks All-Time Career Goals Record

SALISBURY. MD - The No. 9 Swarthmore College men's lacrosse team had its season come to an end with a 18-7 loss at No. 1 Salisbury University in the third round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday night. The Garnet end their 2024 campaign with a program record 15 wins after securing their first NCAA Tournament win on Saturday. 

Von Mabbs will graduate Swarthmore as the program's all-time goals leader with 133 career scores. Mabbs passed Joe Valis '83 and Avery Blake Jr. '53, who were tied at the top of the record book with 132 career goals. The senior netted his record-setting tally on an unassisted score with 15-seconds remaining in the opening half. Mabbs also ranks third all-time in career points with 203. 

Michael Hardiman led Swarthmore's offense with three goals, while Von and Rex Mabbs each tallied two points on a goal and one assist, respectively. Jackson Brosgol and Ryder Maston also had goals for the Garnet.



HOW IT HAPPENED
- Salisbury shutout Swarthmore in the opening quarter as the Sea Gulls rallied for nine-unanswered scores. The Garnet were outshot 19-8 in the stanza, while Drew Tyson made four saves for Swarthmore.

- The Garnet began to generate offensive chances in the second quarter as they outshot the Sea Gulls, 16-11. Following back-to-back Salisbury tallies, Hardiman opened the scoring for Swarthmore with a man-up goal at the 7:09 mark. Rex Mabbs assisted Hardiman's goal, before following with an unassisted score of his own. Salisbury added two more goals, before Hardiman and Von Mabbs closed the half with goals in the final minute. Mabbs eclipsed the program record for career goals with his score in the final seconds.

- Salisbury scored early in the third quarter to bring its lead back to double digits, 14-4. The Sea Gulls added two more unanswered goals until Hardiman got Swarthmore back on track with an unassisted goal at the 1:37 mark. Ryan Pretzer made four saves in the quarter for Swarthmore. 

- Swarthmore struck first in the fourth quarter with a goal from Maston off an assist from Von Mabbs. Brosgol then scored off the ensuing faceoff win to shirk their deficit to nine goals. However, Salisbury ended the game with two unanswered scores to put Swarthmore away.
