Softball Clinches Second Seed on Pair of Walk-Off Wins

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College softball team clinched the second seed in the Centennial Conference Tournament with a Senior Day sweep over Franklin & Marshall College in its regular season finale on Saturday.

The Garnet edged out the Diplomats with a pair of walk-off wins. Swarthmore won game one in extra innings on a two-run error in the eighth inning. They then wrapped up the sweep with a Jordan Jackson RBI single to win game two.

Lane Barron won her 12th and 13th games of the season. Barron allowed one unearned run in the eighth inning to earn the victory in game one, before tossing a two-hit gem to pick up the win in the finale. The sophomore was two outs away from her second no-hitter of the season until she allowed two runs on two hits in the seventh.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Diplomats put pressure on the Garnet with a three-run first inning. However, the Garnet batted around in the bottom half of the inning to take a one-run lead. Swarthmore loaded the bases with three-straight walks, before Olivia McClammy was hit by a pitch to plate the first run. Emily Bertrand then provided the big swing with a two-run double to add two more runs. Molly O'Sullivan then walked to score the team's fourth run of the inning. The Garnet had just one hit in the inning, but batted around to score four runs, 4-3.

- Bertrand retired the side in order in the second and third innings. Alex Simon helped erase a lead off double in the third with a 6-3-2 double play to gun down a runner at home.

- Franklin & Marshall tied the game with a run in the fifth inning, but the Garnet managed to escape the inning with a tie after hurting themselves with a couple errors. The Diplomats eventually took the lead with a squeeze bunt in the sixth, 5-4.

- Swarthmore forced extra innings with a run in the seventh. Iris Barone led off the inning with a single and stole second with nobody out. McClammy then came up clutch with a rocket past the shortstop to bring home the tying run, 5-5.

- The Diplomats struck first in extras with a run on a passed ball, but Barron prevented further damage with an inning-ending strikeout. Down to their final out, the Garnet walked it off in the bottom half after the shortstop dropped a fly ball on the edge of the infield grass, which allowed the tying and game-winning runs to score.
