Women’s Lacrosse Drops Overtime Heartbreaker to Muhlenberg

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's lacrosse team gave their all in a back-and-forth overtime loss to Muhlenberg College, 8-7, on Wednesday night. The game featured four lead changes and five ties.

Helen Stafford kept her team in the game with several phenomenal stops. The senior tallied 12 saves on the night, while allowing just eight goals to record her highest save percentage of conference play.

In a game headlined by excellent defensive play, Aubree Daugherty managed to shine offensively with a career-high four goals. Carly Rodrigues-Reilly added two goals, while Elizabeth Zack scored Swarthmore's only other tally.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Rodrigues-Reilly got Swarthmore off to a quick start with the opening goal within the first minute of play. The Mules then controlled the rest of the quarter with three-unanswered scores in the final 12-minutes of the stanza, 3-1. Both teams were an even 7-7 on shots, while each goalie made three saves.

- Swarthmore stormed back into the lead with three-straight goals to open the second quarter. Daugherty scored within the first minute, while Zack tied the game less than a minute later. Daugherty then put the Garnet ahead with a go-ahead score at the 8:36 mark. The Mules eventually regained the lead with two goals in the final five minutes, 5-4.

- Muhlenberg expanded its lead with 9:44 left in the third quarter. Rodrigues-Reilly provided an answer a minute later to pull Swarthmore within a goal, while Daugherty tied the game with her third goal of the contest at 7:03. Muhlenberg regained the lead at 3:11 and held their advantage for the rest of the quarter, 7-6.

- Daugherty put Swarthmore ahead with her fourth goal of the game with an unassisted tally at the 8:10 mark. Stafford and Muhlenberg's goalie exchanged saves as both defenses worked to preserve the tie. With their backs against the wall, Stafford stepped up to make a crucial save from close range with under two minutes remaining, but the Garnet were unable to capitalize on the offensive end as the game was forced to overtime.

- Stafford made another outstanding save at the beginning of overtime to keep her team alive. The Garnet had a good look at the offensive end, but were denied by another quality Muhlenberg save. After switching sides at the halfway point of overtime, the Mules finally snuck one past Stafford, who was outstanding the entire night. The Mules broke a 22-minute scoreless drought with their final tally.
