IMMACULATA, Pa. - The Swarthmore College baseball team returned north with a wild 11-10 victory at Immaculata University on Saturday morning.
Swarthmore led 4-3 after eight innings, before adding six insurance runs in the ninth. However, the Mighty Macs fought back to force extra innings with seven runs in the bottom half.
Aidan Sullivan answered back for the Garnet with a go-ahead, RBI single in the 10th inning, while
Alexander Rimerman shut the door with a scoreless frame.
Sullivan was a tough out for the Mighty Macs as he reached base four times. The sophomore went 3-for-5 at the dish with a triple and a walk.
Max Roffwarg and
Noam AuYeung also added a pair of RBI to aid Swarthmore's offensive output.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-
Andrew Moy left a runner stranded in scoring position in the opening two innings as he navigated out of two scoreless frames. He then retired the Mighty Macs in order for a scoreless third inning.
- The Garnet threatened in the fourth inning with a leadoff triple from
Aidan Sullivan, but were unable to bring their slugger home. Immaculata then opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the fourth inning to break the scoreless tie, 2-0.
- The Garnet got a run back in the fifth inning after taking advantage of a defensive miscue.
Max Beadling started the rally with a single to center field and later advanced to scoring position on an error. Sullivan then plated the run with a two-out single to right field, 2-1.
-
Liam Alpern took over in the bottom of the fifth with a shutdown inning. The junior was excellent in relief as he tossed three scoreless innings to provide much-needed rest for a tired Swarthmore bullpen.
- In the sixth, the Garnet put their first three batters on to kickstart a two-run rally. Roffwarg led off the frame with a double, while Matt Silvestre walked and
Benjamin Buchman singled to load the bases.
Jett Shue brought home a run with a sacrifice flyout in foul territory, while Beadling singled in the go-ahead run, 3-2.
- The Garnet added another run in the seventh inning to expand their lead.
Kaiden Rosenbaum and
Xavier Taylor singled to start the inning, while Roffwarg plated an insurance run on a squeeze bunt down the first base line, 4-2.
- The Mighty Macs added a run in the eighth to cut their deficit in half. However, the Garnet built a seven-run cushion with a crooked number in the ninth inning. Swarthmore loaded the bases with one out, while Sullivan worked a walk to plate the first run. The Garnet then scored again on an error, before Silvestre added a run with another bases-loaded walk. Buchman added to the scoring with a sacrifice flyout, while AuYeung delivered the final punch with a two-run single, 10-3.
- Immaculata made things interesting with a seven-run ninth to force extra innings. The Garnet then opened the 10th inning with a hit and an error to put the go-ahead run at second base for their reigning All-Region slugger. Sullivan promptly answered the call with a go-ahead, RBI single to put Swarthmore ahead. Desperately in need of a shutdown inning, Rimerman surrendered a lead-off double to open the bottom of the frame. However, the junior left the tying run stranded at third base with a strikeout and a fly out to close the game.
