Men’s Basketball Advances Past Virginia Wesleyan, DeAngelo Becomes All-Time Leading Scorer

HARTFORD, CT - The Swarthmore College men's basketball team won its 10th-straight contest to advance to tomorrow's second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 67-59 victory over Virginia Wesleyan University on Friday night.

Vinny DeAngelo took down the program's highest honor as he became the all-time leading scorer with 1,710 career points. The Aston native dropped 17 points against the Marlins to eclipse Will Gates '13 previous record of 1,702 points.

Michael Caprise led the way in scoring with his third-straight double-double. The senior tallied 20 points and 14 rebounds in another dominant performance for Swarthmore. Virginia Wesleyan had no answer for the big man, who shot a remarkable 9-of-12 from the field.

Swarthmore rode a fast start to victory as they fought off a late Marlins surge. The Garnet held their opponent to four points in the opening 10 minutes of play, while leading by as many as 23 points in the opening half.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- DeAngelo and Caprise combined for the game's first five points until Brady Kageyama knocked down a jumper to cap off a 7-0 start for Swarthmore. The Marlins ended their scoring drought with 13:34 remaining in the opening half after missing their first 12 buckets of the game.

- Swarthmore added to its lead with an 11-0 run midway through the opening stanza. Five different scorers added baskets during the stretch with Cal Hanson, Caprice, Nyle Coleman and Aidan Godfrey contributing a pair of points. DeAngelo then hit from long range to put the Garnet ahead by 21 points with 8:17 left.

- Devin Burger caught fire towards the end of the first with five points in less than 30 seconds. The sophomore knocked down a three-pointer to bring the team's lead back to 20 points, before adding a jumper on the following possession. Moments later, Eddie Paquette answered a Marlins bucket with a three-ball to give Swarthmore its largest lead at 31-8 lead with 5:10 left.

- The Marlins began to claw back before halftime with an 11-6 run in the final five minutes. The team shot 24.3-percent from the field as they trailed 37-19 heading into the locker room.

- Virginia Wesleyan slowly continued to chip away at Swarthmore's advantage. The Marlins pulled within single digits at the 11:15 mark after turning things around with a 15-6 advantage out of halftime.

- Late in the second half, the Marlins threatened after a fastbreak layup shrunk their deficit to five points. Caprise then hit a jumper to end a 6-0 Marlins run before Virginia Wesleyan added a pair of free throws to bring its deficit back to five. Caprise answered again with another bucket, while DeAngelo knocked down a three on the following possession to double Swarthmore's lead, 64-54, heading into the final minute of play.
