SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College baseball team earned its first home victory of the season on Friday, defeating Stockton University, 13-9 in eight innings. The contest was ended early due to darkness.
The Garnet trailed 4-1 in the second inning but exploded for six runs in the frame to take a 7-4 lead and they remained in front the rest of the way. The Ospreys cut the deficit to one (8-7) in the fifth but Swarthmore answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning to pull away for good.
All nine Garnet hitters scored a run with eight recording at least one hit.
Matthew Silvestre was 2-for-4 with a team-high three RBI and one run.
Jett Shue went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI.
Brad Johnston also went 2-for-3 and he drove in one while scoring twice.
Xavier Taylor also notched two hits in three at-bats.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Stockton struck first with a pair of runs in the opening frame. The Ospreys loaded the bases with two singles and a walk before plating two with a double.
- Swarthmore got on the board in the bottom of the first via a run-scoring single by Silvestre.
- Stockton scored twice again in the second, once more on a two-run double, to go back in front, 4-1.
- The Garnet took their first lead of the day with a six-run second.
Max Roffwarg registered a sacrifice fly, Silvestre knocked in another run with a single,
Aidan Sullivan scored on a delayed double steal,
Benjamin Buchman singled in Silvestre, and Shue blasted a two-run shot to left center.
- Roffwarg had another sac fly in the third to make the score 8-4. The Ospreys got within one after scoring three times in the fifth on a single, an error, and a sacrifice fly.
- Swarthmore pulled away for good with five runs in the bottom of the fifth. Johnston drove in a run with a single and later scored on an error, Silvestre walked with the bases loaded, Buchman had a sac fly, and Sullivan came home on another error.
- Stockton tallied a run in both the seventh and eighth innings but
Jack Fitzgerald finished out the victory for the Garnet.
