SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College men's basketball team kept up its solid play on Saturday, defeating conference foe McDaniel College, 67-51, at Tarble Pavilion. It was the Garnet's fifth win in their last six contests and they also secured a spot in the upcoming Centennial Conference Tournament.
Swarthmore never trailed and led by as many as 19. The Garnet held the Green Terror to 35.2% shooting and McDaniel's 51 points was the third-fewest allowed by Swarthmore this season. The Green Terror's 15 turnovers tied the most by a Garnet opponent.
Vinny DeAngelo finished with a game-high 21 points for his fifth performance of 20-plus this year. He was 7-for-13, including 3-for-6 from three-point distance.
Cal Hanson and
Michael Caprise also scored in double figures with 10 apiece.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore got off to a strong start like it has several times of late. The Garnet jumped out to a 9-2 advantage over the opening four minutes. Hanson scored two layups, DeAngelo hit a three, and Caprise added another layup.
- The margin was five (13-8) before Swarthmore doubled up McDaniel over a two-minute stretch to increase its lead to nine (21-12) with 8:41 on the clock.
Nyle Coleman and
Aidan Godfrey each drained a three-pointer with
Eddie Paquette chipping in two points.
- DeAngelo tallied four straight points to give the Garnet their largest lead of the half (27-17) at the 5:09 mark. The Green Terror came back with an 11-5 run to close the gap to four (32-28) before another DeAngelo triple gave Swarthmore a 35-28 halftime cushion. The senior totaled 12 points in the period on 4-of-7 shooting and was 2-for-3 from downtown.
- McDaniel started the second half with a jumper before the Garnet netted 11 of the next 16 to make it an 11-point game (46-35) at the 12:52 mark. DeAngelo led the charge with seven points as he and
Brady Kageyama both dropped in three-pointers.
- The Green Terror strung together six points to get back within five (46-41) but Swarthmore answered with 12 in a row and 17 of 20 to pull away to a 19-point advantage (63-44) with 2:41 left. Caprise sparked the surge with seven points as the Garnet shot 7-of-10 and forced McDaniel to go just 1-for-9 with three turnovers.
