Women’s Soccer Eliminated by Fourth-Seeded Dickinson in Double-Overtime

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's soccer team suffered a double-overtime loss to fourth-seeded Dickinson College, 2-1, in the first round of the Centennial Tournament on Tuesday.

Celia Kanellakos opened the scoring in the 14th minute with the game's first goal. The first-year totaled her sixth goal of the season and first Centennial Tournament goal. The Devils then answered with an equalizer in the 46th minute, before winning the game in double-overtime in the 105th minute.

Lila Travers tallied a game-high four saves. Dickinson out shot the Garnet 17-12, but suffered a 6-1 disadvantage in corner attempts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Sydney Ross registered the first shot on goal for the Garnet in the third minute. The senior fired a strike near the top of the box, but was turned away by a diving save from the Devils keeper.

- The Garnet struck first with the opening tally in the 14th minute. Kanellakos sent a rocket to the back of the net with a strike from the right side of the box to give Swarthmore an early advantage.

- The Red Devils turned up the intensity with the final five shots of the opening half. However, Dickinson wasn't able to get much going as they registered just one shot on goal, which was easily denied by Travers.

- Dickinson evened the score with a game-tying goal in the first minute of the second half. The Red Devils snuck one past the Garnet after getting a redirection in front of the net. The Red Devils had a streak of seven-straight shots against the Garnet defense.

- Moments later in the second half, Travers preserved the tie with a save in the 57th minute. The Devils carried the ball to the right side of the box and fired a strike low, which was corralled by Travers at the near post. Dickinson out shot the Garnet 8-4 in the half.

- The Garnet totaled all three shots of the first overtime, but were unable to register a shot on goal. Kanellakos missed wide right on a couple shot attempts, while Ava Gizzie was unable to connect on their attempt.

- Travers stopped a one-time attempt in the 104th minute to keep the Garnet alive. However, the Red Devils broke through with the game-winner in the 105th minute to eliminate Swarthmore from championship contention. Dickinson played a cross towards the goal, which was deflected by Travers and rebounded by the Red Devils for the winning score.
