LANCASTER, Pa. – The Swarthmore College women's volleyball team maintained its perfect Centennial Conference record with a 3-1 triumph at Franklin and Marshall College on Wednesday evening.
The Garnet dropped the opening set but came back to win three straight for their fourth victory in their last five matches.
Alexia Enache paced Swarthmore with 14 kills to go along with five digs and three blocks.
Isabel Adam and
Keira Miles also reached double-digit kills with 11 and 10 respectively.
Emily Sun amassed 18 assists and 11 digs with
Madeline Mountcastle adding 13 assists. The duo also tallied four and three service aces respectively.
Zindzhi Montgomery contributed a season-high six blocks and
Melissa Eyer chipped in 13 digs.
It was a quality victory for the Garnet as the Diplomats were No. 15 in NCAA NPI. Swarthmore is also now guaranteed a top-three finish in the Centennial standings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet trailed 4-2 in the opening set before reeling off five straight points to take a 7-4 lead. Adam and Miles each recorded a kill with Sun dropping in a pair of aces. However, the Diplomats responded with five in a row themselves to go ahead 9-7 before two Swarthmore points evened the score at nine. F&M then took over for good with a 12-5 run that gave the Diplomats a 21-14 advantage. The home team went on to win the set 25-18.
- The Garnet recovered to post their best attacking set of the night, compiling a .313 hitting percentage in the second. They jumped out to an 8-3 lead before F&M rallied to get within one (9-8). Swarthmore answered with a 7-2 stretch to build a six-point cushion (16-10). The Garnet led by as many as seven (20-13) on the way to a 25-18 victory. Enache registered five kills in the set while Adam and Miles produced three apiece.
- Swarthmore carried the momentum into the third, scoring the first three points and getting out to a 5-2 advantage. The Garnet were in front 7-4 when the Diplomats charged forward with seven of the next nine points to go ahead 11-9. However, Swarthmore bounced back with a 7-0 run to regain the lead, 16-11. Adam and Miles each had two kills and Sun scored an ace. F&M did not go down without a fight, coming back with eight of the next nine for a 19-17 edge. The Garnet then went ahead for good with a 6-1 stretch. Enache recorded a pair of kills and teamed with Montgomery for two blocks. Montgomery also registered a kill. The Diplomats later fought off two set points but a kill by Adam gave Swarthmore a 25-23 win.
- The teams went back-and-forth early in the fourth set until it was deadlocked at 11. The Garnet then took over with a 7-1 surge. Enache totaled three kills, Mountcastle tallied two aces, and Miles added a kill. F&M was able to get the deficit to only four the rest of the way as Swarthmore claimed the match with a 25-18 victory.
