Field Hockey Wins Key Conference Matchup at Franklin and Marshall

LANCASTER, Pa. - The Swarthmore College field hockey team picked up a big Centennial Conference win against Franklin and Marshall College on Wednesday night. Goals by Katherine Kohn and Emma Duffield propelled the Garnet to a 2-1 victory in a critical road matchup as Swarthmore maintained possession of second place in the conference standings.

After a quiet first half for both teams, Swarthmore opened the scoring near the end of the third quarter when Kohn found the back of the net. Duffield quickly added an insurance goal to start the fourth. The Diplomats scored on a penalty corner late in the game but were unable to complete the comeback.

The Garnet recorded both of their goals off penalty corners and totaled 10 corner chances in the win while conceding only four defensively.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet earned a penalty corner with eight minutes to play in the first quarter but were unable to get a shot off. The rest of the period saw a back-and-forth defensive battle with zero total shots between the teams.

- Swarthmore outshot the Diplomats, 4-0, in the second but could not find the back of the net. They earned their second penalty corner of the game in the 28th minute but were stopped by a goalkeeper save.

- Two minutes into the second half, Sophia Hitchingham continued her impressive senior season by drawing back-to-back penalty corners for Swarthmore. Franklin and Marshall responded with its own chance but it was just wide of the goal.

- After two more fruitless penalty corners, the Garnet finally converted on their seventh of the game when Kohn found the back of the cage off a Hitchingham hit in the 43rd minute.

- Duffield tacked on a second goal off an assist from Kohn in the 47th minute. After four corners of their own, the Diplomats got on the board with two minutes left in the game. Cassandra Conklin came up big for the Garnet with a late save to keep Swarthmore in front.
