Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 19 Men's Soccer Upset By Washington College

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The No. 19 Swarthmore College men's soccer team saw a 2-0 lead fall by the wayside as Washington College rallied for three goals in the second half to stun the Garnet, 3-2, in a Centennial Conference game on Wednesday night.

Swarthmore dominated the opening 45 minutes, outshooting the Shoremen, 10-2, and conceding just one shot on goal. An early penalty allowed the Garnet to take a 1-0 lead and they added another goal late in the half for a two-goal cushion at the break.

However, Washington turned it around in the second half, controlling the shot count, 9-5, and recording a 3-1 edge in corner kicks. After registering a pair of goals in a five-minute span to tie the game, the Shoremen netted the game-winner on a penalty kick with under 12 minutes to play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore needed just 3:29 of match time to get on the board as a foul in the box allowed Adrien Marcelli to convert from the spot for his fifth goal of the season. The Garnet threatened with four more shots on target over the next 35 minutes of play but the Washington goalkeeper stopped all four chances.

- In the closing minutes of the first half, Swarthmore capitalized on a scramble in front after a corner kick to take a 2-0 advantage. Joseph Eyiolowope managed to push the loose ball over the goal line and pick up his second tally of the year.

- In the second half, the Shoremen broke through for their first marker in the 59th minute after finding an open man in the box on the right post. The goal started a sequence of sustained pressure by Washington as it produced two more shots and two corner kicks over the next four minutes. The second corner resulted in the tying goal off a header in the 63rd minute.

- With the Shoremen holding the momentum, the Garnet took another hit in the 70th minute when a red card forced Swarthmore to play the rest of the contest shorthanded. The Garnet had two shots following the incident but were unable to put them on frame.

- In the 79th minute, Washington earned a corner kick opportunity. The ball was settled near the top of the box and a shot was blocked by the Swarthmore defense. However, a handball was called on the block, resulting in a penalty kick for the Shoremen. They converted the chance to take a 3-2 lead, their first of the night. The Washington backline allowed just one more Garnet shot, which was taken from distance and turned aside by the keeper.
