No. 11 Women’s Swimming Earns Sweep at Centennial Quad

GETTYSBURG, Pa - The No. 11 Swarthmore College women's swimming team started off its 2024-25 campaign on the right foot with a trio of conference victories at the Centennial Quad on Saturday. The Garnet have won 34–straight matchups against conference opponents, while capturing their 32nd consecutive head-to-head victory. 

Swarthmore took down No. 22 Gettysburg College, 187-74, while cruising past both Bryn Mawr College, 219-42, and McDaniel College, 219-33. The Garnet claimed the top finish in 13 of the 14 events.  

Elle Anthony placed first overall in all four of her individual and relay events. The junior put together a pair of excellent swims on both first-place relays, while taking first overall in the 50 and 100 freestyles, respectively.  

Quinn Weygandt combined for three total victories to open her junior campaign. Weygandt won the 1000 freestyle, 200 IM and was a member of first-place 400 freestyle relay. She also finished as the runner-up in the 200 freestyle. Sophie Rotival also shined with a trio of victories. The senior won both breaststroke events, while helping the 200 medley relay to a top-finish.  

Maya Ambardekar joined Swarthmore's elite with three total victories. The first-year opened the afternoon on the 200 medley relay, before earning her first two collegiate victories in the 100 and 200 backstroke, respectively. The rookie also performed well in the 400 freestyle B relay, which finished as the runner-up behind Swarthmore's top squad. 


HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet opened the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay. The team of Ambardekar, Rotival, Ainsley Jane Tambling and Anthony touched the wall at 1:47.22 to beat out the Bullets for the top finish. Swarthmore also grabbed third overall in the event to claim two of the top three finishes. 

- Weygandt won comfortably in the 1000 freestyle to open her junior campaign. Weygandt beat her opponent by over seven seconds with a time of 10:43.18. She then claimed a runner-up finish in the 200 freestyle (1:56.50), while Ava Craig followed in third place (1:57.33). 

- After finishing first overall as a member of the 200 medley relay, Ambardekar showcased her talents with a top finish in the 100 backstroke. The first-year impressed in her individual debut with a time of 58.85 to beat out Erin Szuromi, who followed as the runner-up with a tie of 59.47. 

- Rotival began her senior campaign with a victory in the 100 breaststroke. A two-time All-American in the event, Rotival touched the wall at 1:04.97 to beat her nearest challenger by three seconds. 

- The senior duo of Annaliese Chen and Lauren Rohde claimed the top-two finishes in the 200 butterfly. Chen raced to a 2:08.05 finish to claim first overall, while Rohde followed with a 2:10.14 mark. 

- Swarthmore showed off its remarkable depth in the 50 freestyle by earning the top-three spots in the event. Anthony led the trio with a time of 24.24, while Tambling (24.90) and Sophie Rodner (25.36) rounded out a dominant showing for the sprinters. 

- Anthony claimed her second individual victory with a top finish in the 100 freestyle. The junior touched the wall at 52.51 to beat out Gettysburg by a full second. Cara Dominici grabbed third in the event with a 54.64 mark. 

- Ambardekar and Szuromi went one-and-two again in the 200 breaststroke. The first-year beat out the senior with a time of 2:08.10, while Szuromi touched the wall at 2:11.30. 

- Rotival claimed her second individual win with a 2:24.58 finish in the 200 breaststroke. The senior finished at 2:24.58, while Chen took third at 2:31.73. 

- Craig put together a first-place effort in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:15.50. Rhode also took third in the event with a 5:20.30 mark. 

- The Garnet swept away the competition with the top-four finishes in the 100 butterfly. Chen led the pack with a 58.42 finish, while Norah Rutkowski followed closely behind at 58.45. Mirabel Fernald placed third (1:00.52) and Rodner (1:00.85) took fourth. 

- Weygandt totaled her second individual victory with a time of 2:09.97 in the 200 IM. The win marked the second of her three victories at the meet. 

- The Garnet continued their dominance as they closed out the meet with a victory in the 400 freestyle relay. The team of Craig, Anthony, Tambling and Weygandt finished with a time of 3:36.36 to lead the charge. Swarthmore's B relay claimed the runner-up spot with a time of 3:39.44.
