Volleyball Opens Michigan Trip with Ninth-Straight Win, Enache Tallies Career-High Kills

HOLLAND, MI - The Swarthmore College volleyball team captured their ninth-straight win with a 3-1 victory over Baldwin Wallace University on Friday.

Alexia Enache began the team's Michigan road trip with a career-high 24 kills. The sophomore became the first Swarthmore player since Kaylee Zhang's 2022 All-American campaign to record 24 kills in four sets. 

Melissa Eyer continued to make a name for herself as one of the region's top liberos. The rookie tallied a game-high 20 digs with three aces and seven assists in another well-rounder performance.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Baldwin Wallace jumped out to an early 8-3 lead against the Garnet with five service aces during the run. Swarthmore fought back and pulled within one point after a 6-0 run. Eyer had a pair of aces and a kill during the stretch to aid the team's late surge, 17-16. The Garnet kept clawing away and eventually tied the game on an Enache kill, 20-20. Despite three late ties, the Garnet were unable to overtake the lead as they fell, 25-23. 

- Both teams remained neck-and-neck to open the second set. The Garnet took an early lead on consecutive kills from Hannah Humphreys and Enache, 10-7. The Yellow Jackets closed the gap to pull within a point, but Swarthmore was able to build back its lead with three-unanswered points, 17-13. Baldwin Wallace remained in the game until the Garnet made a late run with six-unanswered points. Enache went on to clinch the set with a kill, 25-19.

- Baldwin Wallace took an early lead with a 10-6 advantage before the Garnet countered with a 5-1 run to tie the game. Enache rallied for three-straight kills to propel the Garnet to a 6-0 stretch. The Garnet never looked back as they maintained their lead for the remainder of the set. Enache then came through again for the Garnet with another set-clinching kill, 25-22. 

- Enache and Madeline Mountcastle notched consecutive kills to take a 13-9 lead in the fourth set. Baldwin Wallace used a 3-0 run to shrink their deficit to two points, but the Garnet kept answering with three-straight points of their own, 24-19. Angelina Heminway went on to clinch the match with a kill, 25-21.
