GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Swarthmore College men's basketball team had its three-game win streak come to an end with a 74-67 loss at Gettysburg College in Centennial Conference action on Saturday.
The two squads played a tight first half and were separated by just one point at halftime. The Garnet led by as many as eight in the second period but the Bullets rallied for the victory.
Eddie Paquette paced Swarthmore with 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting and he was a perfect 6-for-6 at the foul line.
Michael Caprise poured in 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds while
Vinny DeAngelo contributed 14 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore held an early 4-3 lead when Gettysburg produced a 7-2 run to go ahead 10-6 with 14:03 left in the opening half. The Bullets later had a five-point advantage (17-12) but the Garnet scored seven of nine to even the score at 19 with 7:30 on the clock.
Nyle Coleman led the stretch with the game-tying three while Gettysburg shot 0-for-7 at the other end.
- The Bullets followed with six of the next eight points but Swarthmore responded with six in a row to take the upper hand, 27-25. Gettysburg closed the scoring with a three to take a 28-27 edge into the locker room.
- The Garnet started the second half strong with a 17-8 run for their largest lead of the game (44-36) at the 14:32 mark. Caprise led the way with six points as Swarthmore shot 6-of-7 with a pair of threes. The Bullets came back with eight of the next 10 to close the gap to two (46-44) with 12:55 remaining.
- Four Garnet free throws made the score 50-44 but Gettysburg posted the next seven points to go in front 51-50 with 9:02 left. Swarthmore had its final lead with 7:09 to play (53-52) before the Bullets went on top for good with another seven unanswered points.
- The Garnet fought back and cut the deficit to three (64-61) with 1:31 to go but Swarthmore shot just 2-of-8 the rest of the way as Gettysburg converted 10 of its 12 free throw attempts to secure the victory.
