SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College men's basketball team got out to an early lead and did not relinquish it in a 60-45 victory over visiting Dickinson College on Saturday.
The Garnet defense held the Red Devils to just 14-of-51 (27.5%) from the field, including 6-of-22 from three (27.3%). Swarthmore dominated the rebound battle, 46-29. Four players scored in double figures led by
Aidan Godfrey and
Michael Caprise with 13 apiece.
Vinny DeAngelo and
Eddie Paquette each recorded 10 points with Paquette adding 11 rebounds for his second straight double-double.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Dickinson netted the first bucket of the contest but the Garnet came back with nine unanswered points to seize the advantage. Four different players scored during the stretch with Paquette and Godfrey each hitting a three.
- The Red Devils narrowed the gap to three (11-8) with 11:24 on the clock but Swarthmore responded with nine of the next 12 to up the margin to nine (20-11) with 4:58 remaining. The Garnet stifled Dickinson and held the Red Devils to just 1-of-8 shooting during the sequence. Swarthmore was able to increase its lead to 10 by halftime (28-18). Godfrey led all scorers in the period with 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting (3-5 3PT).
- The Garnet continued to get the better of play to begin the second half, pouring in seven of the first nine points over the initial four minutes to open up a 15-point advantage (35-20). The difference was still 15 (39-24) at the 13:09 mark when Dickinson rallied with a 7-0 surge to get within eight (39-31) with 10:32 left.
- Swarthmore recovered from the Red Devils' run and essentially put the game away with a 16-5 spurt in response. DeAngelo and Caprise led the charge with five points apiece and the Garnet held a 55-36 lead with 3:23 to play. Swarthmore was 5-for-10 during the run, including 3-for-6 from beyond the arc.
